How Do I Clean My Dirty Blinds?
The issue of cleaning blinds comes up from time to time. Typically, this happens around holidays and special events when the heavy cleaning gets done. We’re talking baseboards get dusted, appliances get shined, and how do you clean those blinds?!
No need to worry or fret, you’ll soon be well on your way to being prepared for your next special event with these cleaning tips below!
Dusting
Dusting is one of the best steps to starting most cleaning projects. A soft rag, a microfiber cloth, or a feather duster are all great choices for dusting your slat blinds. Dust is oftentimes easier to remove using a dry method than to clean up using a wet method which can cause clumping. However, heavier dust that has settled onto your blinds over a longer period might require the use of a damp cloth.
Vacuuming
If you’re needing a heavier clean than simple dusting can provide, try your vacuum out. Carefully using the brush attachment from your vacuum on your blinds can sometimes remove excessive dust better and more efficiently than you can by hand. If you’re having trouble getting certain angles easily, a set of vacuum detailing attachments might come in handy!
Spot Cleaning
For marks on your slats blinds and stains on your cloth blinds, a mild detergent or a Dawn Dish Soap/water combination can be used to spot clean specific areas of your blinds. Carefully using a soft-bristled brush to gently scrubs stains can help as well. Once finished with an area, be sure to carefully rinse or wipe up any remaining soap residue. Don’t rush cleaning, blinds were not made to be handled excessively.
Deep Cleaning
If you really want to get your blinds clean, removing them from the window and laying them on a soft, flat surface is the way to go. A towel laid over a table or even on the floor will give you a hard and protective surface for cleaning. Use a mild detergent or a Dawn Dish Soap/water combo to clean your blinds. You can use that same soft bristled brush again here to do careful scrubbing. Don’t forget to clean up any soapy areas when you’re finished. Allow the blinds to dry and rehang them in the same window spaces. This is a bit more of an intensive process with removing and rehanging your blinds, so make sure that you have the time and space to do this without damaging anything.
Specialty Cleaning
Some specialty blinds made out of materials such as wood, bamboo, metal, and more may require different cleaning products and cleaning methods. Typically, your blinds will come with a set of care instructions if you recently added them to your home and kept these papers, otherwise a quick walk down any cleaning aisle will offer multiple options for cleaning the specific surface you’re needing to clean. If you’re ever in any doubt about the correct product or method to clean your blinds with, consult a professional first to avoid causing damage.
Preventing
Preventing is a lot easier than regular cleaning! To help prevent massive cleaning days to clean your blinds and other surfaces, just make it a part of your regular routine to give a quick dust or wipe to your blinds every few months.
Cleaning your blinds can be a chore, but knowing that they’re clean for your family, friends, and guests makes holidays and special events a bit more enjoyable. Regular cleaning also prolongs the life of your blinds and keeps them in better shape. This attention to detail can be so refreshing and can take that extra bit of cleaning stress off your to-do list every time you’re planning a special day in your home.
