How to Measure for Custom Curtains

Measuring for curtains is an important step in ensuring that your window treatments fit properly and look great! Here is a step-by-step guide on how to measure for your new curtains.

  1. Measure the width of your window:

Measure the width of the window from the outside edge of the window frame to the other outside edge. While having excess material is okay, not having enough material will obviously leave gaps. Typically, having almost any extra amount of curtain material isn’t a problem since it will simply bunch up into more folds, unless you’re wanting a sleeker look.

  2. Measure the length of the window:

Measure the length of the window from the top of the window frame to the bottom of the window frame or the desired length of your curtains. You might want your curtains as much as 5-6 inches off the floor for ease of use, or you might want them dragging by several inches for a more elegant look.

  3. Decide on the hanging style:

Decide on the hanging style for your curtains, such as rod pocket, grommet, or tab-top (if you already have specific curtains already in mind). Keep in mind that the hanging style will affect the length of the curtains you need, so make sure to adjust your measurements accordingly.

  4. Measure the curtain rod or track:

Measure the length of the curtain rod or track and add an extra 2-3 inches on each side to ensure that your curtains will fully cover the window and not interfere with the operation of the rod or track.

  5. Take into account any additional elements:

Take into account any additional elements such as tiebacks, swags, or valances that will be added to your curtains. These elements will affect the final length of your curtains, so make sure to include them in your measurements.

  6. Double check your measurements:

Double check your measurements to make sure they are accurate. One of the worst things is to get back from a trip to the store with the wrong curtains. Even worse, is waiting for an order to arrive and it needing to be sent back, especially when it’s a custom order.

  7. Write down your measurements:

Write down your measurements and take them with you when you go shopping in-person and on-line for your curtains. This will help ensure that you purchase the correct size and avoid any mistakes. “The dullest pencil remembers better than the smartest mind.”

At the end of the day, remember to also consider your style preference in regards to the width and length of your curtains, whether you prefer to have full coverage or if you like to have them stack on one side. These are YOUR curtains. It doesn’t matter what is “normal” or what the “trend” is this week. What completes your home?
