How to mount a shelf and get it to STAY!

Part 1/4, tools and parts for the job

Mounting a shelf doesn't seem like it should be a hard task to do, but in reality, we regularly hear homeowners comment on the shelves they mounted that either aren't level or aren't sturdy. In fact, shelf repair is a common problem we get called out to fix. In this first step we'll show you some of the basic tools and parts you should have on hand besides the shelves you're mounting.

Tools:

Most basic tool sets have most of these tools included in them already. You can find some basic tool sets for as cheap as $20-$30 if you're just doing some smaller projects here or there.

Hammer, tape measure, pencil, level, stud finder(electric AND magnetic preferred), screw drivers/electric driver, electric drill, painters tape.

Parts:

Most shelf kits come with the screws you'll need for installation on studs, but otherwise a basic screw set can usually be bought for $5-$7. For help with installing on drywall, here are some of the easiest anchors to use:

Toggle anchor: Self-drilling anchor, no drilling required! Good for heavy shelves.

Toggle bolt: Usually needs a hole drilled up to 1 inch, can be a bit feisty to use but has some great holding power!

Self-drilling drywall anchor: These anchors can be great for your smaller shelves or used to supplement floating shelves. But do note that while advertised as self-drilling they often need a pilot-hole drilled beforehand otherwise they can get out of control.

These are your basics tools and parts to getting your shelves mounted properly the FIRST time!
