Your Home’s Spring Preparation Checklist, Part 1

As the days grow warmer and longer, spring's arrival brings the promise of renewal. And Minnesota spring is something you don’t want to miss! This is the perfect opportunity to prepare your home for the warmer months ahead. Here are some essential tips to get your home spring-ready, ensuring it's in tip-top shape so you can enjoy this time.

  1. Check Your Sump Pump

When snow melts and everything thaws out, the ground around your home will become saturated as the water drains. Making sure your sump pump is in working order is crucial to prevent basement flooding and water damage. This is one of the most common insurance claims in the spring when a homeowner realizes too late that their sump pump is actually not working. A well-functioning sump pump is your best defense against spring's unpredictable downpours and melting snow, keeping your home dry and protected and saving you the headache of a lengthy insurance claim.

  2. Maintain Your Gutters

Checking your gutters is something many dread, but is crucial to prevent water damage from overflowing gutters. Clearing leaves, twigs, and debris can easily be a DIY project with as simple tools as a ladder and a bucket, or sped up with the use of a leaf blower to blow your gutters clean.

  3. Replace Your Filters

Always overlooked and forgotten, filters in your home need regular replacing. Your furnace and AC system have probably been recycling the same stale air through the same stale filters for the past winter. It’s time to get fresh filters in and breathing fresher air again. A simple replacement can make a considerable difference in your home’s air quality, positively affecting everything from your spring cleaning and even your sleep.

  4. Clean Your Dryer Vent

A clogged dryer vent is a hidden hazard. Lint build-up not only impedes your dryer's efficiency but poses a serious fire risk. Cleaning out the vent and checking the exterior flapper for obstructions are simple preventative measures that can keep your home safe.

  5. Start Your Declutter

After a winter cooped up indoors, you might have collected a “few” extra things around your home. Now is the time to start getting things cleaned out so you can enjoy a fresh spring. Use this time as the motivation. While cleaning while it is warm out makes it a bit easier, it’s a bit more enjoyable to be going on walks and starting the grill up than to be junking through your closet. Do a thorough clean-out to free up space and reduce stress this spring.

After a thorough check of your home’s system and clean out, you’re ready to enjoy spring! Minnesota spring is beautiful and like none other. It is a time and place to be fully enjoyed without having to think about your home’s operation. Get ready to enjoy it!
