Dishwasher Cleaning DIY

Dishwashers are probably one of the most used machines we have in our home that we never even take a second to consider would need cleaning. Why would something whose job is to clean need to be washed?! Well, the truth is it does, and if you haven’t cleaned yours out before or ever, then TODAY IS THE DAY!! You may even be smelling something lingering in your kitchen but never considered the possibility of it being your DISHWASHER…

Let’s begin! Obviously, the first move would be to clear out any dishes you have in your dishwasher so you can clean it out properly. At the bottom there will be filter where any food or debris is lingering…. BE CAREFUL of any possible glass or metals in the filter! This will also help to make sure there are no clogs holding up anything. If yours isn’t coming out then there is a possibility it is one that cannot be taken out. Check your Use and Care Guide, or YouTube is always a helping hand in these situations. The second part is the most importation step! Measure two cups of white vinegar in a DISHWASHER SAFE container and place it on the bottom rack. WITHOUT using detergent, run a normal cycle with the heat dry option OFF. Once it’s done, put baking soda at the bottom of your dishwasher and start one more cycle with the HOT WATER CYCLE setting on. After it’s gone through its second cycle you should have a CLEAN and fresh dishwasher, where you can comfortably put your dishes in for a deep clean.

Tip: Make sure when you use the vinegar to double check to make sure it’s distilled. You don’t want there to be any color so it doesn’t stain your dishwasher.

If the vinegar and baking soda aren’t an option for you or you are wanting another cleaning after here is another quick option for you.

If your filter comes out, clear it out! Make sure to keep those dirty dishes out for the time being, and place a dishwasher tablet in the detergent tray. If you’re in need of a deeper cleaning because of build up, place one tablet on the bottom of your dishwasher also. Proceed by running a normal cycle.

These are two options to clean out your dishwasher, or if one doesn’t work to your own personal liking, proceed with the second option to give you that deep clean with all the smells out of your kitchen, leaving you with clear dishes!

Tip: to help keep build up out of your washer, I would personally recommend rinsing your dishes off and make sure any lingering food is thrown into your garbage can. That way it keeps your food taking a nap in your dishwasher and from adding an unwelcome smell to your home.

I hope this blog has been helpful! During the winter sometimes that’s the best time to deep clean everything that gets overlooked!
