TV Mounting Tips, Part 3/6

Two tools to secure your TV mount to the wall.

Securely mounting your TV to the wall is a big deal. TVs and mounts are heavy and can seriously hurt someone if mounted improperly. This is why using studs is very important! While there are heavy-weight rated anchors available, we would recommend homeowners stay on the safe side and use the solid studs available to them.

How do you find a stud behind a wall? Good question! The two stud finders pictured are excellent stud finders that would make a great addition to any homeowners tool kit. They are both simple and do their job well.

A basic Zircon stud finder will cost you about $14 and work great on smooth walls to give you stud edges (or the edges of other objects in the wall).

A magnetic stud finder from C.H.Hanson will cost about $10 and allow you to find the drywall screws drilled into your stud (as well as protective plates covering utilities). This stud finder works great on textured walls!

There are a lot of utilities in your walls. Drilling through a water line or electrical wiring could result in an expensive call to a professional. For this reason we recommend using both of these stud finders together. In case your wall is weird, both finders can help you figure out what's behind your wall so you can confidently, but carefully, drill your mounting holes!
